Community Health

We support health and well-being through education, treatment, and outreach, and we help the most vulnerable among us: people who lack food, housing, and stability.

Shelter Hotline

Every day, we protect the health of people who are experiencing homelessness. We build relationships with them so that they welcome our help, and we constantly respond to emergencies.

Permanent Supportive Housing

People emerging from homelessness need help to become stable. Through intensive case management, our team helps them find homes, stay in their new homes, and achieve the highest possible quality of life.

Electronic Benefits Transfer

“EBT” is the name of the card we issue to people who earn benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. EBT improves access to healthy food, fighting DC’s childhood hunger epidemic, and educating customers about health and nutrition. We process 55,000 cards a year so that families can ensure they have food on their table.

UPO operates DC’s Shelter Hotline; we bring people in from the cold and get them help. The local ABC News station interviewed UPO Outreach Worker Chris Watson about why our work is essential to our community.
