A Second Home that Leads to His Future

September 9, 2022

DC native Lawrence Jackson just graduated from high school and from the UPO CARES Construction Trades Program. Earlier this year, on a school field trip to UPO’s Building Careers Academy, Lawrence heard about how he could get hands-on experience in the construction field. He was intrigued because he’s been his family’s handyman: When his mother would complain about things not working, Lawrence helped as best he could. He realized that with hands-on training, he’d be able to help even more.

In class, Lawrence found his bliss. He felt that the UPO staff nurtured him: They welcomed him with open arms and turned his classroom into a second home. Lawrence loved learning construction skills such as framing, nailing, and saw-work. He is thankful to the whole UPO family for supporting his program.

Next, Lawrence is gearing up to study Engineering Technology at the University of the District of Columbia. His goal is to use his skills in a good-paying job so he can support his family and give back to his community. “I was a hard-headed kid,” he said. “Everyone has [their] ups and downs, but it really takes a village to raise a kid. Thank you!”
