Shelter Hotline
Our work is essential. In 1990, DC’s Dept. of Human Services asked us to operate the Shelter Hotline and respond to the health needs of people experiencing homelessness. Last year, we responded to 84,000+ emergency calls, distributed 195,000+ life-sustaining items, and gave 29,000+ rides to shelter, healthcare, social services, and case management.
“Incredible People”
When DC activated a Cold Emergency Alert, Fox5 reporter Josh Rosenthal wanted to tell a compassionate story. He interviewed UPO Outreach Worker Vincent Blackson. Kindness is in his blood: his father held the same job at UPO.
“My Way of Giving Back”
The Washington Post was captivated by what Orlando Gore does every day: Giving dignity to people experiencing homelessness.
“I was in prison, then living on the street. UPO’s Shelter Hotline team was the reason I got clean and turned my life around. UPO saved my life. Now I’m 12 years clean with a home, a wife, and two children. Thank you!”
