UPO Homeowner Resource Fair Assists Senior Homeowners in Southeast DC!
UPO’s Housing Team hosted a Homeowner Resource Fair, targeted at seniors and older homeowners. Vendors gave five-minute presentations about programs to maintain homes, finance renovations and more. About 40 people came and enthusiastically participated in the program. They asked questions and swarmed the tables afterward for more details.
Attendees received information about rain barrels, tree plantings, utility programs, and low-interest loans to bring their homes up to current code standards. Former DC Councilmember, Sandy Allen, spoke on behalf of the Department of Housing and Community Development. She explained how to access grants for seniors for roof repair and accessibility (widening doorways, building stair elevators, adding ramps, accessible bars, etc.) to help those who came into their house able-bodied but now need help to get around.
The feature presentation was about the creation of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). ADUs are an attachment to the house that can be used for family members or to generate rental income. It can be constructed either as a basement unit, an attachment to the house or an independent structure. In September of 2016, the DC City Council approved zoning regulations that made it possible for homeowners in low-density residential areas (R zones) to construct ADUs.
